Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the head of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) caucus in Parliament, has reassured the citizenry that his side will not participate in any physical violence during the forthcoming Tuesday, October 22 parliamentary session.
In response to threats from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs to seize the majority side of Parliament, he said these things during an interview with Accra-based Peace FM on Monday, October 21.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin underlined that the NPP MPs prefer to conduct a walkout should the NDC MPs try to involve them in fisticuffs or forcibly occupy their seats; they are not inclined towards violence.
He underlined again the dedication of the NPP caucus to uphold House peace and dignity.
This development follows threats by NDC MPs to impose themselves as the new majority caucus in Parliament following Speaker Alban Bagbin’s declaration of four parliamentary seats as vacant.
The Supreme Court has, however, reversed the Speaker’s decision, therefore enabling the four impacted MPs to carry on representing their respective constituencies.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin said the NPP will respect the legal procedures and will not be involved in any conflict, notwithstanding the NDC MPs, led by Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, asserting they are the new majority caucus based on the Speaker’s ruling.
“I can guarantee that there won’t be any confrontation or anything else tomorrow. We are law-abiding citizens, and there is no laxity regarding violence. Should they occupy our seats or engage in any unpleasant behavior, I will lead a walkout,” he stated.
