The confidence that all of the candidates and parties have expressed in the Independent Electoral Commission is one thing that struck the former President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, while he was on a pre-election mission in Nigeria for the West African Elders Forum (WAEF). He has stated that this is one of the things that has struck him the most (INEC).
According to him, all of the parties have testified that INEC has listened to them and taken their concerns into consideration.
Sadly, in a statement he issued, he stated, “I can’t say the same for my Electoral Commission (EC), which was once among the top election administration institutions in the world.”
It is well known that the Chairwoman of the European Commission and her fellow Commissioners hold a particular political party in contempt. How I wish that our very own EC could instill the same amount of confidence in each and every one of its constituents!
Mahama went on to say, “Unfortunately, I don’t have much hope that this will happen when we have an EC that has openly turned down all efforts by the National Peace Council to host a meeting between the Commission and the two major political parties, the NDC and NPP.”
Mahama was talking about how the National Peace Council had tried to set up a meeting between the Commission and the NDC and NPP.
While Nigeria prepares to elect a new leader on February 25, Mr. Mahama is now serving as the head of the WAEF in the country.
Mr. Mahama revealed this information while speaking with journalists in the nation’s capital, Abuja, on the eve of the elections. He explained that the previous West African leaders are in the country to guarantee that the elections are carried out in an orderly manner.
Mahama gave the impression that they had been asked by the federal government to see the polls, and so far they are impressed with the resolve of all 18 candidates to ensure that there will be no violence during the elections.

Mahama divulged the fact that in December of this past year, the Forum sent a three-man delegation to the country in order to carry out a pre-election mediation mission.
Ernest Vai Koroma, a former President of Sierra Leone; Fatoumata Tambajang, a former Vice President of the Gambia; and Mohammed Ibn Chambas, a former President of the ECOWAS Commission and Head of the UNOWAS, were the members of the delegation.
They were joined by Dr. Mohammed Ibn Chambas, a former Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General.
During the mission, the delegation met with President Muhammadu Buhari, the Chair of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the National Security Adviser, presidential candidates, political parties, leaders of civil society, the President of the ECOWAS Commission, development partners, and other stakeholders.
