Weinstein was born in the Flushing neighborhood of Queens, New York City, to diamond cutter Max Weinstein (1924–1976) and his wife, Miriam Weinstein.

Harvey Weinstein’s father moved the family to the United States from Russia when he was a young man (1926–2016). His family is Jewish, and his maternal grandparents immigrated from Poland.

In New York City, he and his younger brother Bob were residents of a housing cooperative called Electchester when they were growing up. After completing his high school education at John Bowne, Weinstein went on to study at the State University of New York at Buffalo.

In the late 1970s, Weinstein and his brother established the independent film distribution company Miramax using profits from their concert promotion business. They named the company after their parents, Miriam and Max, who were both film distributors.

In 2018, The Weinstein Company went bankrupt after a number of months of failed attempts to sell the company or its library of movies. Lantern Entertainment was ultimately successful in bidding on and purchasing all of the company’s assets.

The company was shut down on July 16, 2018, and its website sometime thereafter. A year after that, Weinstein was arrested, and another year after that, in 2020, he was found guilty and sentenced to 23 years in prison for his actions.

Harvey Weinstein tied the knot with English actress and fashion designer Georgina Chapman in 2007. They are parents to a son as well as a daughter.

On October 10, 2017, after the sexual harassment accusations became public, Chapman announced that she was leaving Weinstein.

They were able to come to an agreement in January 2018, and the divorce was finalized seven years later, in July 2021.
