Musk was born in Pretoria, South Africa, where he subsequently grew up. He briefly attended the University of Pretoria before immigrating to Canada at the age of 17, acquiring Canadian citizenship through his mother.

He enrolled at Queen's University for two years before transferring to the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a bachelor's degree in Economics and Physics.

He traveled to California in 1995 to attend Stanford University, but instead pursued a business career, co-founding the online software company Zip2 with his brother Kimbal.

In 1999, Compaq purchased the firm for $307 million. Musk helped build the online bank X.com in 1999, which merged with Confinity in 2000 to form PayPal. eBay acquired PayPal for $1.5 billion in 2002.
