The Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) in charge of Corporate Affairs, Dr. Bossman Asare, has justified the EC’s decision to re-collate some parliamentary election results.
This comes as criticisms mount over the Commission’s handling of the aftermath of the recent elections.
During a press conference on December 24, 2024, Dr. Asare stated that the practice of re-collating votes is not new, citing several instances under previous EC administrations.
“The commission is attempting to demonstrate that what is being done presently is not new. There are many historical precedents,” he said, addressing questions about the legitimacy of the recollection process.
To back up his point, Dr. Asare cited historical examples such as the recollection of results in Tamale’s Tolon constituency (2004), Yapei Kusawgu (2004), and Pru constituency (2004), among others.
The EC refuted allegations of criminality, emphasizing that re-collection is a legitimate step toward ensuring the authenticity and integrity of election results.
He did, however, ask that the MP-elects for Ablekuma North and Dome-Kwabenya be declared before the January 7 inauguration.
