Early rivalry for the party’s 2028 flagbearer position could turn perilous and divert President Mahama’s attention, warns NDC Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah.
According to Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, national chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), early rivalry for the party’s 2028 flagbearer position could turn “very dangerous”.
Just three months after President John Dramani Mahama took office, Asiedu Nketiah stated on Accra FM on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, that it is improper for party members to begin vying for leadership.
He issued a warning that this conduct would divert the president and jeopardise the party’s prospects for future success.
The chairman stated:
“It would be very dangerous for the party to engage in such premature competition, and it will be difficult for you to concentrate if you are President Mahama.”
He emphasised that Mahama’s performance is crucial to the NDC’s prospects in the upcoming elections. He cautioned that the party would suffer if the President failed.
How can you focus on your work as President Mahama, who is in charge of the nation, when people are already battling for flagbearership less than three months later?
Competition may have an impact on Mahama Asidu Nketiah also cautioned that the party’s fortunes could be destroyed regardless of the next flagbearer if the President’s work is hindered by internal rivalry.
He went on to say:
Even if the flagbearer position is forced upon someone, the party may reject it if we are careless and President Mahama fails. It will become quite dangerous if we don’t exercise caution and such competition starts right now.
Instead of pursuing leadership roles, the NDC Chairman urged party members to concentrate on backing the President.
