The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has demanded that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo step down from his position.
At the conclusion of his tour of the Bono East Region, Mahama highlighted his dissatisfaction with the way the government is managing the economy as he was speaking at a campaign rally in Nkwabeng, which is a town located in the Nkwanta South District.
His criticism was directed primarily on the precipitous decline of the Cedi, which has experienced a slide from more than GH¢15 to one US dollar.
“During the Atta Mills’ administration, the exchange rate was GH¢2 to a dollar. When he took office, it was GH¢4 to a dollar. After nearly 8 years in power, the exchange rate has now risen to GH¢¢16 to a dollar.
“President Akufo-Addo should have resigned long ago when the Cedi depreciated to GH¢16 per dollar. It is difficult to see how GH16 to a dollar can be considered better than GH¢4 to a dollar.
Sadly, each and every one of us is currently confronted with this challenging circumstance. It is even the case that the cost of cement has soared.
Criticism with regard to the government of Akufo-Addo
A comparison was made by Mahama between the current status of the economy and the state of the economy during his administration. He emphasized the variations in inflation and exchange rates between the two periods.
Mahama emphasized that the depreciation of the Cedi under the current government has resulted in a huge increase in the cost of living for Ghanaians, which has placed a severe strain on households as well as companies.
It was suggested by the former president that President Akufo-Addo would have resigned if he and his administration had been truly accountable and concerned about the wellbeing of Ghanaians. This was especially true when the Cedi was first beginning its fast slide.
