The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) claims it is unaware of the alleged 20% increase in transport fare announced by the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC).

In an exclusive interview with Adom News’ Jagri Boaz Binyinjom, the GPRTU’s Deputy Public Relations Officer, Samuel Amoah, expressed surprise at the statement, adding that the union had not participated in any conversations leading up to such a decision.

“We only found out yesterday, and we were astonished. “We were not involved in any discussions or decision-making processes regarding this fare increase by the GRTCC,” Mr. Amoah stated.

He explained that fare adjustments are normally made after full consultation with all relevant stakeholders, including the Ministry of Transport.

“We usually sit around the table with all stakeholders, including the Ministry of Transport, before making any decisions on fare modifications. But in this situation, we were not involved,” he noted.

Mr. Amoah stated that the GPRTU will engage the Ministry of Transport in the coming days to examine the situation and identify the best course of action. He also questioned the viability of adopting the suggested increase.

“As it stands, the increment announced by the GRTCC, which is supposed to take effect from August 8, 2025, may not be possible,” remarked the politician.

He did, however, concede the prospect of future fare adjustments based on prevailing economic conditions.

“There is a possibility of transport fare increases in the future, but such decisions must go through the right processes,” Mr. Amoah said.
