Arsenal defeated Real Madrid in a tense match at the Bernabeu to go to the Champions League semi-finals, with Bukayo Saka scoring a goal and missing a penalty.

Arsenal had a 3-0 aggregate advantage to defend following their thrilling victory in the first leg last week. They were allowed to quiet the boisterous home crowd when they were given a penalty in the 13th minute.

Thibaut Courtois saved Saka’s feeble, chipped attempt as he moved up.

But the England attacker made up for his mistake when, following a deft pass from Mikel Merino, he chipped a stunning second-half finish over Courtois to virtually end the match.

Just two minutes later, Real responded when Vinicius Junior scored an open goal after William Saliba made a horrible error.

However, Real failed to take advantage of that ray of light, and Gabriel Martinelli completed a fantastic evening by making it 2-1 in stoppage time with a breakaway goal that Merino had again set up.

Arsenal is only the third team to make it to the Champions League semifinals, and they will play Paris St-Germain in the round of four.

Soon after Saka missed the penalty attempt, the home crowd, who had created a fantastic atmosphere and were hoping to ignite a comeback that would be remembered for years to come, believed their team had a chance to equalise the score when they were given a penalty of their own.

After Kylian Mbappe had thrown himself to the ground after Declan Rice had barely touched him, the referee’s decision was overturned after a protracted consultation with the video assistant referee.
