Twitter in Meltdown as Elon Musk “Restricts” Tweeps

According to Elon Musk, Twitter has temporarily implemented daily reading limitations to address “extreme levels” of data scraping and system manipulation.

Musk stated in a tweet that verified accounts are currently only allowed to read 6,000 posts each day.

Elon Musk has imposed “temporary limits” on how many tweets per day users can read.

New unverified Twitter accounts are only permitted to access 300 posts per day, while unverified accounts have been restricted to reading 600 posts per day.

On Saturday, some users claimed to have seen a notification that read “rate limit exceeded”; as a result, RIP Twitter and #Twitterdown started to trend on the social media platform.

Musk, who serves as the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has not specified how long the interim restrictions will be in effect.

Twitter in Meltdown

According to trouble and outage monitoring site Downdetector, complaints began to come in shortly after noon UK time. The website had thousands of reports by 6 o’clock.

The current action comes after Elon Musk earlier declared that users would need to have an account on the social media site in order to access tweets, a decision that Musk on Friday referred to as a “temporary emergency measure”.

In October 2022, the billionaire completed a $44 billion (£35 billion) acquisition of the social media platform, and in April, he unveiled a payment scheme for “blue ticks,” or verified accounts.

Linda Yaccarino, a former executive at NBCUniversal, was named as Twitter’s new CEO in May. At the time, 52-year-old Elon Musk said he would take on the job of executive chairman.

Since his acquisition, Twitter has drastically reduced costs and fired thousands of employees, many of whom had been involved in initiatives to thwart harmful and unlawful content, safeguard the integrity of elections, and present correct information on the site.
