Born in Austria on January 12, 1972, Torger Christian “Toto” Wolff is a millionaire motorsport executive, investor, and former racing driver. He is also known by his nickname, “Toto.”
Toto Wolff Bio
In addition to his roles as team principal and CEO, he is a third-party owner of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team. The beginning of Wolff’s career in auto racing was spent competing in the German Formula Ford Series and the Austrian Formula Ford Championship.
In 1994, he participated in the Nürburgring 24 Hours and won his class. Subsequently, he took part in the FIA GT Championship as well as the Italian GT Championship. As an investor, Wolff first concentrated on Internet and technology businesses when he established Marchfifteen in 1998 and then Marchfifteen Investments in 2004.
Marchfifteen Investments was one of Wolff’s businesses. He is an expert in making strategic investments in medium-sized industrial and publicly listed firms, such as Williams F1 and the German HWA AG, among others.
Wolff established the investment companies March Fifteen (1998) and March Sixteen (2004), both of which initially concentrated on making investments in businesses related to the internet and technology. Since 2003, Wolff has focused on making strategic investments in publicly traded and medium-sized industrial firms as its primary area of emphasis.
In 2006, Wolff made an acquisition that gave it a 49 percent ownership stake in the German HWA AG. The following year, the firm went public on the stock market. The business was in charge of Mercedes-Benz’s Tourenwagen Masters race program and was responsible for the development of F3 engines as well as the Gullwing Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 racing vehicle.
Among the company’s other ventures is BRR Rallye Racing, which is one of the leading rally component retailers in Europe. In addition to that, Wolff is a co-owner of a sports management firm along with Mika Hakkinen, who is a former Formula One driver.
The company has worked with several racing drivers, including Bruno Spengler, Alexandre Prémat, and Valtteri Bottas. In April of 2020, Wolff made a financial investment in Aston Martin Lagonda Global Holdings plc by purchasing a 4.95% share in the company.
This stake was eventually reduced to less than 1%, though. This deal did not have any effect on Wolff’s operational job with Mercedes or the cooperation between the two companies. In June of 2020, Wolff owned a 5% share in Williams F1, which was later sold as part of Dorilton Capital’s takeover of Williams. Wolff’s investment was bought out by Dorilton Capital.
In August 2021, the tabloid Le Journal de Montréal published an article that made the incorrect speculation that Toto Wolff and Aston Martin F1 boss Lawrence Stroll were involved in insider trading with respect to Aston Martin shares.
Wolff refuted the speculation in comments that he provided to the same newspaper, which were published in the same issue. This accusation was debunked when the BaFin in Germany and the FCA in the United Kingdom both announced that they had not discovered any proof of misconduct in their respective investigations.
