The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that any votes cast for the Ghana Freedom Party’s (GFP) candidate, Akua Donkor, in the December election will be void.
Dr. Bossman Asare, Deputy Chairman of the EC in charge of Corporate Services, verified this in an appearance on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, November 16.
He stressed that while Akua Donkor’s image and name will appear on the presidential ballot, any votes cast for her will be rejected.
“Now that we know we have 12 candidates, any vote for Akua Donkor will be nullified. “She cannot win,” Dr. Asare declared.
According to him, the EC is aggressively educating the public about the issue in order to reduce invalid votes.
This explanation comes after another GFP candidate, Philip Appiah Kubi, was disqualified, leaving Akua Donkor’s appearance on the ballot as a procedural concern.
EC Chairperson Jean Mensa stated during an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting on November 12 that the ballot order will stay unaltered notwithstanding the disqualification.
“The printing of presidential ballots is already 90 percent complete,” Ms. Mensa stated, adding that maintaining the current system prevents unnecessary delays.
