Kwabena Kwabena, a Ghanaian highlife crooner, has renewed debate about whether Ghana has record companies.
In an interview with Kwame Dadzie on Joy FM’s Showbiz A-Z, the ‘Adult Music‘ hitmaker questioned the existence of record labels in Ghana’s music industry.
When asked if he would accept a deal with a Ghanaian record company on advantageous terms, he responded, “Are there record labels in Ghana?”
“No, no, no.” “I’m sorry, but there is no record label in Ghana,” he explained.
Some people, including himself, argue that many music organizations referred to as record labels are music management and promotional enterprises. He claims that most of these companies supply label services and do not operate as traditional record labels.
Others have argued that the size of a record label has little to do with its function, citing the fact that firms of all sizes fulfill similar goals.
Some Ghanaian record labels include RuffTown Records, Highly Spiritual Music, Lynx Entertainment, Black Avenue Musik, Mimlife Records, SarkCess Music, MicBurnerz Music, and Flip the Music, among others.
