TEWU-TUC set to strike today

The Teachers and Educational Workers Union of the Trades Union Congress (TEWU-TUC) is launching a nationwide strike today, Monday, November 18, to protest the government’s inability to address long-standing concerns about their working conditions.

TEWU-TUC has expressed deep dissatisfaction with the government’s delays in finalizing, signing, and implementing revised working conditions for employees of the Ghana Education Service (GES), the Ghana Library Authority, the Museums and Monuments Board, and Public Technical and Traditional Universities.

The union has stated that negotiations for these adjustments have been ongoing for some years without a conclusion, resulting in increased unhappiness among members.

The union claims that the lack of progress on these issues is unacceptable and that industrial action is now the only way to push for change.

The TEWU-TUC contends that failure to tackle these concerns is damaging to its members’ well-being and the efficient operation of these critical organizations.

In reaction to the walkout, the National Labour Commission (NLC) has scheduled a meeting with TEWU-TUC and other stakeholders on Wednesday, November 20, 2024.

The NLC wants to arbitrate the ongoing conflict and encourage conversations aimed at resolving the union’s concerns.

The strike is expected to impair services in the impacted sectors, and the TEWU-TUC has stated that it would continue until their issues are addressed.

The union has urged the government to take prompt action to finalise and implement the amended working conditions for its members.
