President John Dramani Mahama announced on Saturday that the government will pay teacher and nursing trainee allowances through the Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD).
He stated that this would ensure that students’ allowances were paid regularly, just as the CAGD paid salaries to government personnel.
He stated this was done to prevent delays in providing allowances to needy students.
President Mahama announced while addressing a durbar at Tamale’s Jubilee Park as part of his “Thank You Tour” of the Northern Region following his victory in the December presidential election.
President Mahama earlier in the day paid a courtesy visit to Ya-Na Abukari II, Overlord of Dagbon, at the Gbewaa Palace as part of his Thank You Tour of the region.
The President reiterated some of the activities proposed in the government’s 2025 Budget Statement and Economic Policy, stating that funds had been set aside to provide free sanitary pads to girls in schools to ensure they stayed in school during their menstrual periods.
He promised to complete the Eastern Corridor Road, among other projects, to improve the country’s transport system.
He thanked the region’s people for overwhelmingly supporting the National Democratic Congress in the December Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
Mr Ali Adolf John, Northern Regional Minister, urged the President to consider creating a military camp in Yendi to solve recurring crises along the country’s Eastern Corridor.
