The Supreme Court is set to begin hearing and ruling on the vacant parliamentary seats today, Monday, November 11, following an adjournment on October 30.
This case attempts to prevent the dismissal of four MPs who ran as independents in the previous general election.
Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo had previously directed the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, to deliver the required documents by Wednesday, November 6, after the Speaker’s counsel, Thaddeus Sory, asked for more time to confer with the Speaker and obtain appropriate instructions.
Supreme Court to deliver ruling on vacant parliamentary seats today
In the previous session, Attorney General Godfred Dame claimed that the Speaker of Parliament should be removed from the proceedings, citing his office’s authority to represent public servants in constitutional interpretation disputes.
Based on this position, Dame encouraged the Supreme Court to proceed with interpreting the constitutional aspects of the case without the Speaker’s participation.
