Nationwide strike looms despite SSNIT halting hotel sale

Today, organized labor is scheduled to go on strike across the country in opposition to the Social Security and National Insurance Trust’s (SSNIT) plan to divest itself of its sixty percent ownership in four hotels.

In response to threats of a strike by Organized Labor, SSNIT stated on Friday that it was terminating the sale to Bryan Acheampong, the Agriculture Minister, of Rock City Hotel.

Additionally, Rock City Hotel withdrew its bid for the acquisition.

Organised Labour is determined to carry out the strike notwithstanding the termination.

The National Secretary of UTAG, Dr. Eliasu Mumuni, expressed dissatisfaction, claiming a breach of trust on the part of SSNIT, which he said disregarded their concerns and warnings.

Following an ultimatum from Organized Labor, NPRA intervened and said that the deal would be postponed. Thus, organized Labor proceeded back quietly and just when we were thinking that sleeping dogs were lying, it popped up that NPRA had given the approvals.

“Again, Monday, July 15, has been set as a day for strike and again, SSNIT is coming out to publicly say they have terminated the transaction,” he told Citi FM.

“But there is that breach of trust and that is why we are saying that because there is that public press statement issued [announcing the termination], we as part of the broader organised labour front should not go and sleep.

“We think that it is time we look into the SSNIT board structure to have the current members relieved of their positions and bring new people on board.”
