The Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana initiated a nationwide strike to protest their unsatisfactory working conditions.
This is the result of the government’s refusal to comply with their requests for improved service conditions, which were made following a succession of protests and negotiations.
Effective Monday, September 16, 2024, it is anticipated that all members of the association will cease their services at all public universities in the nation.
The government was unable to fulfill the September 16 deadline for implementing the demands, despite the fact that an agreement was reached, according to the group.
The group stated in a statement signed by its National Chairman, George Ansong, that the government failed to pay them the new rate of vehicle maintenance and related allowances.
Furthermore, they assert that the government has neglected to distribute its tier 2 deductions to its fund administrators since January 2024, in addition to recalculating the interests on pension allowances from 2010 to 2016.
Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana declares strike effective Sept. 16
The association, in conjunction with other worker unions in universities, initiated a nationwide industrial action in January 2024 in response to the aforementioned demands.
The strike was rescinded after the government pledged to honor their side of the negotiations.
It is anticipated that all administrative offices, libraries, and hospital facilities on the campuses of public universities, as well as security personnel, will be closed on this day.
The group’s national leadership has stated that they are not prepared to terminate the strike until their demands are satisfied.
“Therefore, it is directed that all member campuses strictly comply with this directive,” the statement concluded.
