Govt to reintroduce road tolls in 2025, Ghanaians react

The government has finished preparing for the 2025 reintroduction of road tolls.

This was disclosed on Tuesday, July 23, in Parliament by Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, at the mid-year fiscal policy review for 2024.

On November 18, 2021, Kwasi Amoako-Atta, the former minister of roads and highways, issued an order stopping toll collection at the many tollbooths located throughout the nation.

Following his announcement that road tolls had been eliminated during his 2022 budget presentation, former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta issued this directive.

However, the administration has reversed course and approved the creation of a framework for the 2025 reinstatement of road and bridge tolls.

“Mr. Speaker, Cabinet has also granted approval for the disbursement of an additional 1.5 billion Ghana Cedis to settle outstanding claims relating to the financial management companies; the establishment of a framework for the re-introduction of Road and Bridge
Tolls in 2025” he added.

Dr. Amin Adam also mentioned that the government has approved “the operationalization of the integrated property tax system and the amendment of the Fiscal Responsibility Act to reinstate the numeric threshold that was suspended in 2020.”
