The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed pleasure with the Supreme Court’s decision to re-collate parliamentary results in four constituencies.
In an interview, Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong, a member of the NDC legal team, praised the decision as a victory for the rule of law.
The previous Attorney General and Minister of Justice noted that the decision was important for safeguarding electoral integrity and ensuring justice is administered in controversial situations.
“It simply means that by Monday, we must file an affidavit opposing the mandamus case in each of the four constituencies.
The Court has also mandated that the hearing occur on Tuesday, so we are generally satisfied,” she told Ghana-based ChannelOne TV.
The Supreme Court on Friday overturned a High Court ruling directing the Electoral Commission (EC) to re-collate election results in four constituencies: Okaikwei Central, Ablekuma North, Tema Central, and Techiman South.
The NDC filed an application against the High Court’s judgment on December 20.
The Presiding Judge, Justice Gabriel Pwamang, delivered the verdict, stating that “Since the orders that have been brought to be quashed are separate and distinct, we have decided to exercise our discretionary power to quash by certiorari having regard to the peculiar circumstances of each ruling.“
The Supreme Court, however, affirmed the re-collated results in two other constituencies, Nsawam Adoagyiri and Ahafo Ano North, leaving those results unaffected by its decision.
