Tottenham’s late collapse cost them a 2-0 UEFA Super Cup lead with five minutes to play, as Paris Saint-Germain won their first European championship of the season on penalties in Udine.
Set-piece goals from Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero either side of half-time appeared to give Thomas Frank a perfect start in his first competitive game as Spurs manager, with a courageous defensive display keeping the Champions League winners at bay for much of the game in Italy.
However, in the closing minutes, fellow substitute Kang-In Lee pierced Tottenham’s backline by rifling in a shot from the edge of the box, as Frank’s side tired and PSG were rejuvenated by the entrance of Fabian Ruiz in particular.
Tottenham looked poised to win their second trophy in less than three months, with their lead intact until the 94th minute, when Goncalo Ramos’ diving header took the game to penalties.
Spurs, true to form, took the lead in the shoot-out after Vitinha missed PSG’s first kick, but after Van de Ven and Mathys Tel both failed to score from 12 yards, Nuno Mendes stepped up to seal their defeat as the French champions recovered from their Club World Cup final defeat exactly a month ago by the smallest margin.
