Sefwi Wiawso constituents protest Bagbin’s removal of their MP from Parliament

The Sefwi Wiawso constituency’s residents have taken to the streets to voice their displeasure over Speaker of  Parliament Alban Bagbin’s Monday expulsion of their member of parliament, Dr. Kwaku Afriyie.

Wearing red and black clothing, the demonstrators called him biased and marched through the streets with the slogan, “Apologies to our MP.”

They declared that Alabn Bagbin was politicizing and purposefully defaming their spokesman.

On Monday, July 22, during a legislative session, Speaker Bagbin’s remarks were questioned by Dr. Afriyie, sparking the dispute.

After reading a letter from the President suggesting two judges for the Supreme Court, the Speaker spoke.

The remarks offended Dr. Afriyie, and the two got into a furious argument.

In a rare display of parliamentary drama, Speaker Bagbin invoked his authority and ordered the marshall to escort Dr. Afriyie out of the Chamber.

The situation was brought under control, but the constituents of Sefwi Wiawso are demanding an apology from the Speaker.

“We will not sit down for our MP to be disgraced in such a manner,” said one of the protesters.

“The Speaker must apologize for his actions,” another added.

The protest has brought attention to the growing tensions between the Speaker and some Members of Parliament.
