PRINCOF urges gov’t to increase teacher trainee allowance

Allowance

Wiawso College of Education Principal suspends SRC president

The government is being urged by the principals of the 47 education colleges in the nation to raise the monthly allowance for trainee teachers from 400 to 1,000 Ghana cedis.

Professor Atintono, the President of the Principals, claims that the existing allotment is insufficient, particularly because each student is only given 8 cedis each day to eat.

The trainees’ fundamental needs, particularly their eating, are not being met by the existing quantity. We’re calling on the government to examine it immediately,” he said.

Additionally, Professor Atintono suggested that the government think about eliminating student feeding entirely and raising the allowance so that trainees can handle their own feeding.

“The college feeding system needs to be reconsidered. Give the pupils a more manageable amount so they can handle their own meals.

The principals were reassured by Sector Minister for Education Haruna Iddrisu that their concerns are being taken into account.

He said, “The government is dedicated to examining the allowance and promptly addressing your concerns.”

In a related move, the principals urged the government to expedite the completion of their terms of service.

“We should be treated fairly, taking into account our role in this nation’s teacher preparation program.”

Acknowledging that the principals should have better working circumstances, the Education Minister concurred.

The Minister stated, “We will endeavour to guarantee that your conditions of service are promptly addressed.”

The leaders also urged more funding for infrastructure development and the availability of official cars.

The minister responded by pledging to work with GETFund to finish at least ten college projects that had been put on hold.

Given the growing pressure from education stakeholders for a thorough assessment of teacher training support, the government is anticipated to make specific announcements in the upcoming weeks.
