Finance Minister Dr. Casiel Ato Forson has allotted GH¢684 million for teacher and nursing trainee allowances.
Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, Finance Minister, outlined financial allocations for numerous sectors and programs in the 2025 budget, focussing on education, infrastructure, social protection, and disaster assistance.
Dr. Forson stated during the presentation of the 2025 Budget on March 11 that the funding is part of the government’s ongoing commitment to investing in the country’s education and healthcare sectors, ensuring that future teachers and healthcare trainees receive adequate support during their training.
“We have allocated GH¢203 million for the payment of teacher trainee allowances and another GH¢480 million for nursing trainee allowances,” he said.
The GH¢203 million allocated for teacher trainee allowances will help thousands of students enrolled in teacher training colleges nationwide.
The NDC during the former John Mahama administration abolished trainee allowances, which were later reintroduced by the NPP administration under Nana Akufo-Addo.
It is also unclear why the current Mahama government is continuing to pay the allowance, especially given that it previously advocated that trainee nurses and teachers should have access to student loans like their counterparts in other tertiary institutions.
