VIDEO: Police arrest man who threatened to harm public officials

The Ghana Police Service has effectively apprehended Ibrahim Mohammed, also known as “Kanawu,” as a result of the issuance of a GH¢50,000 reward for credible information that contributes to his capture.

The suspect was sought for multiple instances of issuing severe warnings to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, and for threatening to injure several public officials, including Interior Minister Henry Quartey.

After a video surfaced online depicting the suspect making grave threats against key government figures, the suspect was declared wanted on September 9, 2024. Kanawu made explosive allegations regarding the long-unsolved murder of lawmaker JB Danquah, a case that has captivated the nation for years, and he also promised to shoot and kill officials in the video.

Kanawu’s apprehension on September 11, 2024, has been greeted with relief, as security concerns had intensified in the wake of the video’s dissemination. A bounty was previously offered for any information that would lead to his whereabouts, as the Ghana Police Service had previously appealed to the public for assistance.

In the viral video, the perpetrator not only targeted Quartey and Dr. Dampare but also issued a warning that anyone who obstructed him would suffer the same fate. Law enforcement agencies responded promptly to his threats, which caused great concern throughout the nation.

The suspect is currently in police custody and is anticipated to be dealt with following the rules of law in preparation for court. Police are encouraging the public to maintain composure, assuring them that the situation is under control and that any additional developments will be communicated promptly.

As the Ghana Police Service continues to strengthen its efforts to safeguard public officials and guarantee national security in the face of escalating threats, this arrest is a significant milestone.

As some individuals endeavor to exploit the impending general election to incite tension and exacerbate public anxiety, the Ghana Police Service is prepared to preserve order.
