Over 30 students hospitalized after eating waakye

Due to suspected food poisoning, around 30 students from the Central Region’s Ajumako-Afransi Technical and Vocational Institute were admitted to the hospital.

According to reports, the students were brought right away to the Ajumako Baah Salvation Army Polyclinic after experiencing unsettled stomachs following dinner.

The incident transpired on Tuesday, June 11, 2024, after lunchtime waakye and stew consumption.

Some of the impacted students are being treated at the Ajumako District Government Hospital, while others are being cared for at the Ajumako Baah Salvation Army Polyclinic.

In an interview, physician assistant Daniel Agyeakpor said that the majority of students are in stable condition and that the cause of their stomach aches is being determined by test findings.

The administrator of the Salvation Army Polyclinic has appealed for government support to address the issue. School authorities have not yet commented on the matter.

“So students started trooping to a facility over the night where there were complaints of diarrhea and vomiting. As of now, most of them, even all of them, have been stabilized, but we don’t know the root cause.

“So, we are now waiting for the lab results, so we cannot conclude on the cause of whatever they’re presented with. I can’t tell because I’m not at the school with them. I’m dealing with the conditions they’ve presented with their symptoms.

“And we can’t diagnose or we can’t jump to conclusions without proper investigation. So, I cannot conclude on the cause now. All we can say is we are undergoing investigations. But overnight, as I said earlier, they started coming, not much, few of them came during the day, which is normal.”
