The Rotational Nurses and Midwives Association of Ghana has declared plans for a statewide strike beginning June 2, 2025, in protest of the government’s failure to pay their outstanding allowances.
According to the nurses and midwives, they are owed 12 months in unpaid allowances, which they claim has grown unbearable. Despite establishing a 14-working-day deadline to spur government action, the group claims its concerns have been met with silence.
Ebenezer Boateng, President of the Association, told Citi News that he was frustrated that their situation was still being ignored.
“The minister has not publicly communicated with us, which is quite disappointing. This is because they now regard us as insignificant in the health sector, the ministry, and the general public,” he bemoaned.
Boateng confirmed the group’s intention to carry out the strike if no action is taken.
“On June 2, we will go on a nationwide strike.” We don’t want to hear any stories from them. This has been a continuous problem for roughly 5 years. “All they give is an assurance, which we don’t need right now,” he said.
The association claims it has no choice but to withdraw its services until tangible actions are done to remedy the payment backlog.
