Today is the day when the National Executive Committee and the National Council of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), which is now in power, will get together to decide when the party’s primaries for president and parliament will be held.

At the meeting, a date for the beginning of nominations will be announced for both of the next elections.

The long-awaited meeting that was originally scheduled for January 31 has been moved to today since a significant number of Council members are not available.

According to reports that are attributed to the Council, the party has scheduled the election of its presidential candidate for November 2023, the election of parliamentary candidates for constituencies that have sitting NPP Members of Parliament (MPs) for January 2024, and the election of parliamentary candidates for constituencies that do not have sitting NPP MPs for April 2024.

However, in a statement, the NPP stated that the deadlines in the preceding paragraph were not true and that dates had not yet been determined.

Alan Kyerematen, who formerly served as Minister for Trade and Industry, has said that he intends to run for the position of NPP flagbearer and become the party’s new leader. He will compete against Dr. Akoto Afriyie, a former minister of agriculture, and Boakye Agyarko, a former minister of energy, both of whom have already announced their desire to run.

Francis Addai-Nimoh, a former member of parliament for the Mampong Constituency, made a public announcement on February 1 that he intends to run for the position of flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) when nominations for the position are opened.

The former lawmaker stated that a preliminary study carried out by his staff, together with consultation and counsel from certain party veterans, psyched him up to bring on board his professional skills and ideals in order to maintain political power.
