Following Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko’s withdrawal, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Presidential Elections Committee called off the scheduled run-off.
Concerns were voiced by the former energy minister about the choice to limit voting in the party’s runoff election between Francis Addai-Nimoh and him to National Council members only.
They were tied for fifth place with nine votes each from the elections on Saturday.
NPP cancels Saturday’s run-off
He argued that it was unlawful to permit only a small number of people to cast ballots in the run-off, and he warned the Committee Chair that he would not support such unconstitutionality.
The Committee resolved to cancel the elections following an emergency meeting on Thursday, allowing Mr. Addai-Nimoh to run with the four other candidates who had already been elected in the November 4 primary.
According to Committee Spokesperson Alexander Afenyo-Markin, “I think that Saturday’s elections are now put on hold” as a result of his withdrawal from the campaign.
Elections are not necessary because there are currently five aspirants.
Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Assin Central MP Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, former Trade and Industry Minister Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, former Food and Agriculture Minister Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, and Mr. Addai-Nimoh are the five individuals currently scheduled to compete on November 4.
