The National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) has successfully intercepted a big cocaine cargo weighing 3.3 metric tonnes bound for Accra from the Western Region.

The precisely orchestrated operation occurred on March 4, 2025, at Pedu Junction in Cape Coast, when investigators uncovered 143 sacks of raw cocaine hidden beneath sand in a dump truck.

The truck, which left Takoradi in the Western Region, was on its way to Weija in Accra with two people on board.

The interception followed the NIB’s considerable intelligence-gathering activities.

Preliminary field testing by the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) identified the drug as cocaine, with an initial seizure of 2,974 kilogrammes.

On March 8, NIB detectives raided a suspect’s home and discovered an additional 13 sacks and one bag of suspected cocaine, totalling 345.07 kilogrammes.

Comprehensive laboratory investigations by NACOC and the Ghana Standards Authority later confirmed the overall shipment of 3,319.68 kilogrammes as high-quality cocaine, with purity levels ranging from 50% to 70%.

The recovered narcotics, with an estimated street value of more than $350 million, are thought to have been trafficked into Ghana via maritime routes employing fishing vessels.

Isaac Quaicoe and Kenneth Cobbinah have been remanded into custody and are scheduled to appear in court on April 2, 2025.

The NIB has identified other individuals who remain at large and is stepping up efforts to apprehend them, ensuring that all those involved face the full weight of the law.

This operation demonstrates the NIB’s persistent commitment to combating transnational drug trafficking and ensuring national security.
