As a result of the injunction action that Dr. Kwabena Duffuor submitted to the court in opposition to the primary elections, the campaigning that was intended to get the former Minister of Finance chosen as the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has been put on hold.
Speaking of Ghana Tonight with Alfred Ocansey on TV3, Wednesday, May 10, Mr. Frtiz Baffuor, who is a leading member of the Duffuor campaign team, said, “As a result of the court action, we have suspended the actual campaign until we get the nod from the court.” Baffuor was the previous Minister of Information in the Mills’ administration.
On Tuesday, May 9, Dr. Duffour submitted an injunction plea to the High Court in an effort to halt the primaries as a result of his worries regarding the electoral album.
According to certain sections of the application, the plaintiff “avers that the partial delivery of the photo album to his representatives on May 4, 2023, was in itself out of time considering the magnitude of the verification exercise required of them prior to the internal elections of May 13, 2023.”
Earlier, the campaign team for Dr. Duffuor called for a postponement of the presidential primaries scheduled to take place on May 13 due to what it sees as a faulty register.
In a petition that was submitted to the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) and the Elections Committee of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Monday, May 8, under the signature of Kofi Kukubor, the Head of Research and Strategy with the campaign team of Dr. Duffuor, it was stated that an extensive review of the voters’ register or photo album for 220 constituencies had identified several discrepancies that render the register incomplete or inaccurate.
The campaign staff stated that entering the election with such a register undermines the credibility and integrity of the election and has the potential to cause irreparable harm to the candidate for flagbearer, Dr. Kwabena Duffuor.
