The Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, has inaugurated a committee of 13 members to review the 1992 constitution of Ghana and, responding to this move, an NPP communications team member in the Bibiani Ahwiaso Bekwai constituency of the Western North Region, Kumi Frederick, has clearly opined that it is long overdue because most laws in the constitution have outlived their relevance; therefore, reviewing it is necessary and advantageous to the country.
Speaking to AkuapemHann , he revealed that the late president, Prof. Evans Atta Mills, commenced this gesture in 2010 but unfortunately he could not complete it before his demise, so it’s good news to us. He is also elated that the committee is bipartisan, which he thinks would fast track the process, adding that truly, there are many things in the rule of law that need to be amended.
He further urged the committee to also seek concerns of Ghanaians on what to be cleared or added and further beseeched that both minority and majority members on the committee should consider the country first and should not take political positions rather do everything devoid of politics to favour posterity.
Mr. Kumi is of the view that presidents alone should retire on their salary after their tenure ends, their aides shouldn’t be offered any ex gratia like the Article 71 office holders.
He added that the power to appoint an IGP Â should be vested in the police council to do so and not the president, adding that whether MMDCEs should be elected or not must be finalized in the review.
According to him, the country’s position on LGBTQIA+ should be declared in the constitutional review. Also, a corrupt president should be prosecuted immediately, whether in government or not, to deter others rather than waiting for 10 years later before a fraudulent president can be jailed, which the communicator bemoaned that such Articles and Clauses in the current Ghana’s constitution retrogress the nation.
