The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has stated that the party made changes to its leadership in Parliament after due consideration and planning.
According to Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, the election in 2024 will be contested on the issue of the economy, and as a result, the party has the responsibility to present itself in the best possible light.
Asiedu Nketiah said, the primary focus of the political party’s campaign message leading up to the election will be on the state of the economy; as a result, the leadership of the party’s parliamentary group has been reshuffled.
During his speech on Tuesday, he stated that the new leadership will be able to better spread the message of the party in Parliament due to the skill sets that they possess.
“The economy is expected to be the central issue in the 2024 election, and as a result, the discussion is going to focus almost entirely on the economy. Therefore, if you are a genuine political party that is seeking to win an election, you should. To come out on top of this discussion, you need to put your best foot forward.
“You can’t simply go about telling people that the economy is in shambles when you haven’t been able to put your specialists there to be able to convey to Ghanaians how you would do things better,” the president said. “You can’t just tell people that the economy is in shambles.”
Asiedu Nketiah, revealed “so here is the time where we need our financial and economic folks around, and that is why we put them there.”
On every front, the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Parliament has been updated recently.
According to the party, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has succeeded Haruna Iddrisu as the leader of the minority. Iddrisu had held that position previously. Kofi Armah Boah, a member of Parliament for Ellembelle, will take over for James Klutse Avedzi as the Deputy Minority Leader.
Kwame Agbodza will now serve as the Chief Whip for the opposition, and Ahmed Ibrahim of Banda and Comfort Doyo Ghansah of Ada will serve as his deputies, respectively.
Notwithstanding this, several MPs from the NDC have voiced their disagreement with the move, labeling the development as a “coup d’etat” and questioning the logic behind the shift.
One of them is the Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, who characterized the timing of the decision made by the party’s hierarchy as being “wrong.”
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosiisen on the same day, the visibly displeased lawmaker explained that as far as he and other NDC MPs are concerned, the current crop of parliamentary leadership have been diligent in their duties. He added that he and other colleagues who are NDC MPs are concerned about the current crop of parliamentary leadership.
As a result, he cast doubt on the reasoning for the shift and criticized the leadership of the party for neglecting to consult the whole Minority Caucus before implementing the new policies.
