The Ministry of Education has informed Parliament that all Ghana Education Service (GES) teachers who are currently awaiting financial clearance will be fully engaged soon.

The guarantee came in response to a question from Abena Osei Asare, Chair of the Public Accounts Committee, who wanted to know why some teachers hadn’t been paid after eight months.

Mrs. Osei Asare was pleased that the education officials were displaying a willingness to resolve the matter.

Deputy Education Minister Dr. Clement Apaak, who led the ministry’s team to the session, assured Parliament that steps were underway to resolve the issue.

He agreed with the committee chair that the impacted teachers were entitled to their jobs as citizens serving their country.

“The Honourable Chair, I completely agree with you. These are Ghanians. They are our family, children, and constituents.

I can promise you that the Honourable Minister has worked tirelessly to obtain the necessary clearance for this matter to be settled,” Dr. Apaak stated.

He noted that the Education Minister had been in continual discussion with the Finance Ministry and Parliament as part of the effort to address the issue.

However, GES Director-General Professor Ernest Davis stated that out of the 15,755 instructors granted financial clearance since last year, 10,112 had been successfully processed, leaving nearly 6,000 teachers “for one reason or another.”

According to him, the present GES management, which took office earlier this year, inherited an ongoing process that had already hired approximately 6,000 teachers.

The effort was then suspended, and impacted applicants were instructed to reactivate their clearances in order to secure posts.
