A 38-year-old unemployed man who robbed a Nungua resident and stole an Itel mobile phone valued at GH¢350 was sentenced to six years’ jail by a Circuit Court in Accra.

Thomas Kwabena Vordzorgbe is claimed to have used a machete to slice the victim’s left hand before forcefully seizing the phone.

He pleaded not guilty to one count of robbery, but after a complete trial, Basilia Adjei-Tawiah’s court declared him guilty.

Facts of the Itel phone robbery

The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector John Gohoho, informed the court that the complainant is a Nigerian national from Delta State who lives at Nungua Cocoa Beach, whilst Vordzorgbe lives at Nungua Kingsway.

On November 11, 2022, at approximately 10:00 p.m., the complainant went to a popular joint in Spintex to socialise with friends, departing the venue at 3:00 a.m. the following day.

The inmate, who spotted the complainant from a distance, followed him to the station and demanded that he relinquish his stuff. When the complainant objected, “the convict pulled out a machete and slashed him on the left hand, thus causing harm to him,” Chief Inspector Gohoho stated.

“Complainant became helpless and surrendered his Itel mobile phone to the convict,” he reported.

The complainant eventually filed a report with the Nungua Police Station and was given a medical form for treatment.

On the same day, around 7:00 p.m., the complainant learnt that the convict had been seen offering a stolen phone for sale at Nungua Lorry Station.

The complainant went to the place with others, observed Vordzorgbe, and identified him as his attacker.

The felon was apprehended, and a search of him turned up the complainant’s Itel mobile phone.

The prosecution informed the court that Vordzorgbe accepted the offence in his cautionary statement.
