Malo Gusto quickly emerged, along with others such as Castello Lukeba, as one of Lyon’s most exciting new talents during the preseason in the summer of 2021. He was even named player of the match in a 4-1 friendly victory over Wolfsburg of the Bundesliga. Peter Bosz had been picked by Juninho as both the head coach and the assistant coach for the next season.

Léo Dubois, a player for France, was officially replaced at the start of the 2021–22 season by Gusto. At the same time, Mattia De Sciglio, Melvin Bard, and Maxwel Cornet were among the fullbacks who left the organization. On August 7, 2021, when Lyon faced Brest in the season’s first game, Gusto made his debut. His actions made him the club’s youngest starting defender in Ligue 1 since the signing of Samuel Umtiti.

Under Bosz’s leadership, Gusto continued to get attention in a few instances as he began matches like the 2-0 Europa League victory away to Steven Gerrard’s Rangers or the 2-1 Ligue 1 away defeat to Paris Saint-Germain. Gusto nevertheless stole the show on multiple occasions, even if it seemed like he was still second to Dubois in the right-back hierarchy throughout that late summer and early fall. The fact that Dubois was still alive proves that.
