Malo Gusto Biography

Malo Gusto is a French professional football player who is now the right defender for Lyon in Ligue 1. Gusto was born in France on May 19, 2003.

Early on, Malo Gusto was established in the Décines-Charpieu area, which is now home to the Parc OL in the Lyon Metropolis.

When Gusto was a little boy in Villefontaine, Isère, his father had him play rugby. However, Gusto soon turned to football and is now pursuing his dream of being a professional player while obtaining his Baccalauréat technologique degree. Gusto’s father is a rugby player.

Club Career

At the ASVF, Malo Gusto started his playing career. He subsequently transferred to Bourgoin-Jallieu for a year before joining the under-14 squad at the Olympique Lyonnais academy. Amine Gouiri, a senior academy teammate of his, also made a similar switch.

Gusto’s arrival in Lyon the same year that his previous team moved to his hometown’s Stade des Lumières was a complete coincidence.

Malo Gusto belonged to the same generation as Rayan Cherki, Yaya Soumaré, and Florent da Silva. He eventually agreed to his first professional contract with the French club in December 2021. He had previously made a couple appearances on the roster for Rudi Garcia’s Ligue 1 matches at that point. He had previously demonstrated his talent with the reserve team in National 2 and the Youth League.

Malo Gusto made his professional debut for Olympique Lyonnais on January 24, 2021. In the 90th minute of his team’s 5-0 win against Derby du Rhône opponent Saint-Étienne away in Ligue 1, he entered the game as a replacement for Bruno Guimares.

The young defender committed his future to Lyon by signing a new deal in June, which would keep him with the club until 2024, following another brief stint in Ligue 1 at the conclusion of the season.

Malo Gusto quickly emerged, along with others such as Castello Lukeba, as one of Lyon’s most exciting new talents during the preseason in the summer of 2021. He was even named player of the match in a 4-1 friendly victory over Wolfsburg of the Bundesliga. Peter Bosz had been picked by Juninho as both the head coach and the assistant coach for the next season.

Léo Dubois, a player for France, was officially replaced at the start of the 2021–22 season by Gusto. At the same time, Mattia De Sciglio, Melvin Bard, and Maxwel Cornet were among the fullbacks who left the organization. On August 7, 2021, when Lyon faced Brest in the season’s first game, Gusto made his debut. His actions made him the club’s youngest starting defender in Ligue 1 since the signing of Samuel Umtiti.

Under Bosz’s leadership, Gusto continued to get attention in a few instances as he began matches like the 2-0 Europa League victory away to Steven Gerrard’s Rangers or the 2-1 Ligue 1 away defeat to Paris Saint-Germain. Gusto nevertheless stole the show on multiple occasions, even if it seemed like he was still second to Dubois in the right-back hierarchy throughout that late summer and early fall. The fact that Dubois was still alive proves that.

International Career

Malo Gusto parents are from Portugal and Martinique, and he was born in France. He has played fullback for the under-17 and under-18 teams while also representing France at the under-16, under-17, and under-18 levels of the game.

However, the COVID outbreak prevented the majority of youth international confrontations or competitions from taking place as planned in 2020-2021, so he did not participate in any official games with the latter.

It wasn’t until September 2021, when the pandemic was starting to show symptoms of slowing down, that the young defender finally won his second cap for France. He was playing for the under-19 squad this time. He was invited to compete in a friendly tournament in Slovenia with his coworker Rayan Cherki.

The host country, Slovakia, and Russia will all be competing in the event. He began all three of the games there and participated fully in each one, finally winning the opportunity to also wear the captain’s armband.

Nevertheless, Sylvain Ripoll immediately promoted both him and Cherki to the under-21 squad a month later.

On October 8, 2021, the two of them made their debut with the espoirs, coming off the bench to help their team to a crucial 5-0 victory over Ukraine in the European Championship qualification round.

Style of Play

Malo Gusto has long been recognized as an extremely agile and offensively driven player, ever since he played eight-a-side football at Villefontaine. He began his career by either playing as a striker or an attacking midfielder.

Malo Gusto experimented with a variety of positions on the field while attending the Lyon academy, including wide midfielder, advanced playmaker, and right winger. His extraordinary speed and agility could now be fully utilized on the right side of the defense, where he finally found a place to fit in.

Malo Gusto is noted for being both a very athletic and hard-working fullback, which allows him to be decisive in the other team’s half of the field thanks to his talent and passing accuracy.
