The Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG) has called a nationwide strike beginning Thursday, February 20, 2025, to protest President John Mahama’s appointment of Samuel Adom Botchway as Registrar of the Births and Deaths Registry.
In a statement dated February 13th and addressed to regional secretaries, CLOGSAG’s Executive Secretary, Isaac Bampoe Addo, stated that the decision was made by the National Executive Committee (NEC) during a meeting on February 11th to discuss the appointment of politically exposed persons to the civil service.
The statement mentioned:
The Council took note of the appointment of Mr Samuel Adom Botchway, a politically exposed person, as Registrar of the Births and Deaths Registry.
The National Executive Council (NEC) determined that if Mr Samuel Adom Botchway is appointed Registrar of the Births and Deaths Registry, CLOGSAG will initiate a nationwide strike.
Despite heavy opposition from CLOGSAG, Mr Adom Botchway took office on Wednesday, February 12, 2025.
During a brief ceremony at the National Office of the Births and Deaths Registry, housed in the NALAG House at Shiashie in the Greater Accra Region, the outgoing Registrar, Madam Henrietta Lamptey, formally handed over the reins to Mr Botchway.
Following this, CLOGSAG’s national leadership has directed all of its members across the country to remain at home beginning Thursday, February 20, 2025, until further notice.
The group claims that the nomination of Mr Adom Botchway, who is viewed as politically exposed, compromises the civil service’s independence.
Meanwhile, the administration has yet to release an official response to the strike warning, and whether negotiations will take place to settle the situation is unknown.
