President John Mahama has restated his commitment to completing the Sewua Hospital by the end of the year, pointing out that other critical projects in the Ashanti region started by his former administration had languished in recent years.
Addressing the clergy in Kumasi on Sunday, he told them that his government would prioritize these unfinished projects in the Ashanti region to improve the region’s healthcare and infrastructure.
He emphasised the importance of the Sewua Hospital in relieving congestion at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, allowing critical repair work to continue.
“I pledged Otumfuo that we would construct the Sewua Hospital this year. The completion would allow us to relieve congestion at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, allowing vital rehabilitation work to proceed,” President Mahama added.
Aside from the Sewua Hospital, the President addressed delays in other key projects, including the Afari Military Hospital.
He added that conversations with the contractors, Euroget De-Invest S.A., had been fruitful, and they had agreed to resume work immediately to ensure its timely completion.
His speech also emphasised the importance of infrastructure development in Kumasi.
President Mahama stated that projects such as the Suame Interchange and several road improvements had been initiated without securing finance, increasing citizens’ problems.
“We are actively seeking funding sources to accelerate progress on these projects to alleviate the difficulties and inconveniences residents of Kumasi endure,” according to him.
Regarding the stalled Kejetia Market Phase II project, President Mahama recognised that Ghana’s debt swap programme has slowed its progress.
However, with official negotiations with the creditor committee over, he indicated confidence in engaging lenders in bilateral discussions to begin operations.
“With the completion of official negotiations, we can now begin bilateral discussions with lenders to restart work on the Kumasi Market Phase II project,” he said.
