President John Dramani Mahama has guaranteed public sector workers that if the economy recovers, they will receive increased pay in the coming year.
He made the statement on Thursday while addressing a National Tripartite Committee meeting at the Ministry of Labour, Jobs, and Employment, where the administration announced a 10% rise in base salary for public sector employees.
The Labour Minister, Dr Rashid Pelpuo, has announced that the daily minimum salary has been raised to GH₵ 19.97, following organized labor’s previous request for an increase in base pay.
“Let us moderate our demands for this year. Once we have recovered from these obstacles, we will set reasonable targets to reduce inflation, lowering the cost of living.
We shall concentrate on expanding the economy to improve things. When the economy grows, we will distribute the rewards properly,” he stated.
He continued, “I am only appealing to you to achieve an agreement on this topic so that we can use this year as a period of rectification. We’ll watch how the economy evolves once we’ve made the required modifications.
Once it proceeds in the direction we all wish for, and if we have an Independent Emoluments Committee, and you suggest a 35% increase, I will support it since it will influence my compensation as well.”
