Mahama-Bawumia contest in 2024 is all we pray for – Bagbin

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has speculated that, Mahama-Bawumia two brothers from the north will likely run against each other for the presidency in 2024.

According to the Speaker of the House, this would be the first time in the history of Ghana’s Fourth Republic that candidates for the two major political parties in the country would originate from the northern section of the country.

The Speaker made this prediction while paying a visit to Yagbonwura Bii-Kunutu Jewu Soale, the Overlord of Gonja, at his residence in Damongo.

“The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has already elected my younger brother John Dramani Mahama as its flagbearer, and if the National Patriotic Party (NPP) elects Dr. Bawumia in November, then we will have two northern brothers competing with one another for the position of president, which I believe is something that we all wish for.

“It is now the time for development in the north, and I urge you to prepare yourselves accordingly for the battle that lies ahead.”

He made an impassioned plea to the people, urging them to see above their political differences in order to further development.

“At this moment, the two major parties in Ghana are both coming to the conclusion that the candidates for flagbearer will be our boys from the north.” Please hear me when I say that I beg each and every one of you to put aside our disagreements and stand for our brothers.

Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto, for his part, assuaged the Speaker’s concerns by reassuring him that the Gonja Kingdom is prepared to work together with the government and other organisations to foster the growth of the young Savannah Region.

“We are a peaceful people, and we will be ready to provide the needed support to you and the government so that we can see the development of our kingdom.”

As part of the celebrations that are taking place to honour 30 years of continuous democracy in the House of Representatives under the Fourth Republic, the Speaker is meeting with a number of renowned chiefs in the north.
