Alfred Thompson, a member of the opposition New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) communications team, has criticised the government for not being transparent about Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang’s health status.

During a News Review segment on JoyNews on Monday, March 31, Thompson voiced concerns over the government’s failure to provide detailed information after the Vice President was flown out of the country for medical treatment.

“I am concerned about the limited details provided. If an incident occurred on Friday, Ghanaians deserve to know exactly what happened and why she was taken to the hospital,” he stated.

He stressed that, as a public figure, Opoku-Agyemang’s health is of great importance to citizens, and her condition should be kept secret.

“Once you hold political office, your personal affairs become a matter of public interest. That’s something we must acknowledge,” he added.

Thompson also criticized the decision to seek medical treatment abroad, recalling how the National Democratic Congress (NDC), while in opposition, opposed such moves.

“They argued that government officials shouldn’t seek medical care abroad. Have we forgotten what Okudzeto Ablakwa (MP for North Tongu and former Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs) said? Even former President Mahama made similar statements in 2017 when Dr. Bawumia traveled for medical treatment.”

On Sunday, March 30, the Presidency released a statement confirming that Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang had received medical care at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) after experiencing a sudden health issue on Friday, March 28, 2025.

The statement indicated that she sought treatment at UGMC on Saturday and, based on medical advice, was recommended to undergo further care abroad to aid her recovery
