Kwesi Appiah leads Sudan to AFCON triumph, as Ghana regrets missed opportunities.
Ghanaian coach Kwesi Appiah has successfully led Sudan to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), following a spectacular qualification campaign in difficult circumstances.
Despite Sudan’s political instability, which caused all of their matches to be played away from home, Appiah’s team earned eight points to ensure their spot in the tournament.
Sudan, led by Kwesi Appiah, produced a decisive performance in October, defeating his former country Ghana 2-0. That result was significant, putting them in a great position to qualify. Sudan’s last Group F match against Angola ended in a hard-fought 0-0 draw, securing their AFCON place.

This achievement resembles that of the late Sir Jones Attuquayefio, who notably led Benin to the 2004 AFCON while Ghana failed to qualify. Ghana have missed out on Africa’s best football competition only once before this year.
While Sudan celebrates its success, Ghana’s effort was a failure. The Black Stars finished last in the group with no victories, scoring only three goals in six games—a dramatic contrast to Appiah’s success.
