Kennedy Agyapong will contest NPP flagbearer race for 2028 elections – Brother confirms

Kennedy Agyapong

Kennedy Agyapong, a significant figure in Ghana’s New Patriotic Party (NPP) and former presidential candidate, is likely to compete for the party’s flagbearer position ahead of the 2028 general elections.

His brother, Ralph Agyapong, announced his choice in an interview with Kings Jersey TV in the United States on March 15, 2025.

Ralph highlighted that altering internal dynamics within the NPP now favour Kennedy Agyapong’s candidature, putting him in a strategic position for the upcoming primaries.

I have it on good authority that he will run for president or the NPP primaries next year, assuming an early congress. “He will be on the ballot,” Ralph Agyapong said.

Kennedy Agyapong previously ran in the NPP’s 2024 presidential primaries, finishing second in the Super Delegates Conference with 14.30% of the vote against former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who received 61.47%. Despite falling short, his impressive performance proved widespread support within the party.

According to Ralph Agyapong, the NPP’s setback in the 2024 general elections has forced many party members to reassess their support for Dr. Bawumia, which will help his brother’s chances in the 2028 primaries.

“As I speak, a lot of people have made a U-turn,” he said, signalling increased support for Kennedy Agyapong ahead of the upcoming internal contest.

When asked about the 2024 primaries, Ralph regarded his brother’s campaign as an uphill battle against both inside and external party forces. He also hinted at the possibility of an early congress to select the NPP’s flagbearer, which might hasten Kennedy Agyapong’s comeback to the presidential campaign.

Ralph Agyapong criticized the NPP’s 2024 election plan, blaming the party’s loss on inadequate campaign methods and emphasizing the need for new leadership to reposition the party for 2028.

“The strategy that was used did not help the party to win,” he said, implying that Kennedy Agyapong is the strong, relatable candidate required to lead the NPP forward.

With the party preparing for a difficult primary, Kennedy Agyapong’s early declaration is expected to affect the fight, as NPP members and supporters keenly monitor the emerging events.
