The transition team of the next National Democratic Congress (NDC) government has promised to overturn any last-minute recruiting, payments, and promotions carried out by the departing New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.
This comes amidst apparent tensions between the NPP and NDC transition teams over claimed last-minute choices by state agencies such as the Interior Ministry, Ghana Revenue Authority, and Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
While the NDC transition team has condemned these activities as unconstitutional and in bad faith, the NPP transition team has justified them, claiming that President Nana Akufo-Addo’s mandate is valid until January 6, 2025.
In a statement issued on December 17, the NDC transition team denounced these actions as poor faith and stated that they will be rectified once power was transferred formally.
The NDC statement reads:
The President-elect’s Transition Team wishes to state unequivocally that, given the government’s bad faith, all of these payments, recruitment, transfers, and promotions, some of which are backdated, will be reversed and, where necessary, public officials responsible for them held accountable when a formal transfer of power occurs.
The NDC also issued a harsh warning to public personnel, asking them to reject pressure from the outgoing administration, as such activities could result in serious consequences when John Dramani Mahama takes office on January 7, 2025.
In response, Fatimah Abubakar, spokesman for the NPP transition team, denied the allegations. Speaking with Joy News on Tuesday, December 17, she emphasized that no agreement had been struck to block last-minute recruitments and that the outgoing administration was acting within its legal authority to make administrative decisions.
