The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, has repeated that he is not involved in illicit mining, often known as galamsey.
Chairman Wontumi has categorically claimed that he has always engaged in responsible mining and so cannot be tied to any galamsey operations.
He made these remarks to journalists during an interview by the Ghana Police Service’s Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on Monday.
“I was invited by the police and accused with galamsey. “I showed them my licence to prove that I do not engage in illegal mining or galamsey,” he claimed.
“They also claimed I was working in the forest, which I denied. “If they have any evidence, please show it to me,” he urged.
He admitted to seeking for a permission to operate in a forest region, but noted that the application was not approved.
Chairman Wontumi stated that the Forestry, Lands, and Minerals Commission advised him that the land in question had been designated for preservation.
“So, if anyone is working there now, I am not aware of it,” he informed me.
