Ghanaian musician Kuami Eugene has declared that, despite his popular success in secular music, he still considers himself a gospel minister.

In an interview with Doreen Avio, the award-winning highlife performer stated that his path began in the church, where he was spiritually and musically trained. According to him, his status as a gospel minister remains unchanged.

“When I notice a post on social media and someone wants to share anything, Eugene Marfo will simply come up. I’m still a minister of God, and the transition began in the church. The church taught me everything I know, including how to play the piano and guitar. While in school, I continued to play music and drums for the church. I was doing music before, but the motivation wasn’t as strong as it is today,” he explained.

Kuami Eugene also discussed how a journey to the Volta Region for a gospel event influenced the trajectory of his life and career. The trip, organised by a buddy who was a student teacher at the time, proved to be a watershed moment.

“She was a pupil teacher who invited me to a three-day convention hosted by her church. I was Minister Eugene Marfo back then. That was where I got my first pay cheque, so shout out to that female friend of mine,” he said.

Following that experience, he was chosen for MTN Hitmaker and finished second runner-up before being signed by Lynx Entertainment. That signalled the start of his ascension in Ghana’s music business.

He thanked God, his family, and significant mentors such as Richie Mensah and Eric Goka for their encouragement throughout his path.

Kuami Eugene, born Eugene Marfo, has subsequently established himself as one of Ghana’s most popular performers, with hits including Angela, Wish Me Well, Open Gate, and Monica.

He has received numerous prizes, including Highlife Artiste of the Year and Artist of the Year at the Vodafone Ghana Music prizes.

He is presently promoting his latest hit, Do Better.
