Helicopter crash: Full list of roads to be closed for State Funeral

The Ghana Police Service has issued a number of temporary road closures, traffic diversions, and parking arrangements ahead of the interdenominational and interfaith state funeral for the victims of the recent military helicopter crash.

The ceremony is set for Friday, August 15, 2025, at Independence Square in Accra.

The measures, which seek to ensure public safety and smooth traffic management, will see selected roads near the site temporarily closed, with diversions in place for cars.

Road closures

The following routes will be closed for traffic during the event:

28th February: Road from CEPS Traffic Light Intersection to Castle Road Junction.

Osu Cemetery Traffic Light on Lokko Street.

Castle Road from AU to the Osu Cemetery Traffic Light.

Starlet 91 Road is closed at the Ministry Traffic Light Intersection.

Traffic Diversions

Motorists are advised to take note of these diversions.

Traffic from La, Labone, and Osu on the 28th February Road to the Central Business District and Ministries will be redirected onto Salem Avenue Road at the Castle Traffic Light and connected to Oxford Street.

Motorists travelling from Lokko Street in Osu to Castle Road should utilise Ajumaku Street and Oxford Street in Osu.

Traffic from John Evans Atta Mills High Street to Black Star Square will be redirected into Liberia Road at the CEPS Traffic Intersection, then to the National Theatre Traffic Light Intersection.

Traffic from the AU Circle to Castle Road, via the Osu Cemetery Traffic Light, will be redirected along Abdul Diouf and King Hassan Roads before joining Abdul Nasser Road at the Ghana Institute of Journalism.

Approved Parking Areas

Only vehicles with valid windscreen entrance stickers, namely RED stickers with the VVIP inscription, will be permitted admission into the Black Star Square arena and parking areas. The designated parking locations are:

VVIP, VIP: Black Star Square

Forecourt of the State House.

International Conference Centre

Access Bank Car Park

Osu Cemetery Car Park

Accra Sports Stadium Car Park

Ministries Area

Ministry of Food and Agriculture Car Park

Marine Drive Football Park

Afua Sutherland Car Park

Towing and recovery operations.

The police have warned that no vehicles would be allowed to park or drive past restricted zones.

Towing and recovery trucks will be on standby to remove any abandoned, disabled, or improperly parked automobiles on and around the festival grounds.

The public, particularly motorists, is requested to actively cooperate with law enforcement and other security services to guarantee appropriate traffic management during the state burial.
