Today, August 4, 2025, the government is anticipated to announce a new producer price for cocoa for the 2025/2026 crop season.

According to reports, the announcement will go ahead once all the committees that are looking at the pricing structure have finished their job and all the appropriate meetings with stakeholders have taken place.

There are clear signs that the new price will be a big rise in dollars.

But there is still some doubt about what the new price is really worth in cedis, as the Ghanaian cedi has gone up a lot versus the U.S. dollar in the last several months.

The current producer price is GH¢3,100 for a 64kg bag and GH¢49,600 for a tonne.

The new prices are being put into place by the government before the formal start of the cocoa season on Thursday, August 7, 2025.

Last month, President John Mahama said again that his government is committed to making sure that cocoa producers get at least 70% of the world market price.

He remarked that this strategy is meant to give the farmers who are the backbone of Ghana’s agricultural industry back their dignity and justice.

Last night, cocoa was selling for about $7,555 per tonne on the world market.

However, the real worth of any increase in local currency terms is still a big worry, especially because the government says it has been subsidising cocoa prices for the previous five months, paying farmers around 90% of the world market price directly.

Dr. Randy Abbey, the Chief Executive of COCOBOD, spoke on JoyNews’ PM Express Business Edition about his worries that the cedi’s rise could hurt farmers’ real profits.

“What we’re experiencing today is a time when prices are high around the world, which usually means that our farmers make more money.

“But the gains might not be as big when they are converted into Ghana cedi because the cedi is going up so quickly,” Dr. Abbey said.
