On Tuesday, the Black Meteors of Ghana’s under-23 national team defeated Algeria by a score of 1-0, securing their spot in the Africa U-23 Cup of Nations tournament that will be held in Morocco in 2023.
The victory came in the second leg of their qualifying competition, giving them a 2-1 aggregate win and opening the door for them to compete in the Olympic Games only if they reach the semis at the AFCON in summer this in Morocco.
The Black Meteors’ hero was Abdul Fatawu Issahaku, who scored the match-winning goal after only 12 minutes of play to provide a much-needed boost for his team.
Algeria never appeared to be at ease in front of the impressive crowd at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, and the team continued to create several chances and dominate the game.
The Black Meteors have not qualified for the Olympics since 2004, but thanks to this victory, they can continue to hope that they will be able to do so in the future.
In order to improve their chances of qualifying for the competition, the team must finish in the top three of the Africa U-23 Cup of Nations tournament. This requirement makes the team’s qualification prospects even more difficult.
The head coach, Ibrahim Tanko, and his players are determined to put up a good fight and make history for Ghana, despite the challenging task that lies ahead of them.
